Saving Private Ryan Released in 1998, Saving Private Ryan is a war movie directed by Steven Spielberg. It tells a story of saving Private James Ryan (Matt Damon) who is an American paratrooper was trapped behind the enemy in Normandy during the Second World War. Unfortunately, James Ryan is the youngest and only surviving son of a mother who had received notices on the same day of the death of three of her four sons. The mother would be extremely grieved and helpless if she lost her remaining son. After the US Combat Commander knew the situation, he decided to organize a squad of eight soldiers include Captain Miller (Tom Hanks) to look for this only hope, James Ryan, of the family and bring him back to his mother safely from the war.†¦show more content†¦As the theme of this film of eight people saving one person, it may never happen in reality. However, they still carry out their duties in order to prevent a decrepit and ailing mother suffer all her sons have been killed in the war. The fiction of human nature has touched people’s heart deeply, so that we shall not be overcritical about whether it is consistent with historical facts or other numerous issues. This should be the brilliant point of the director by impressing audiences with the sharp contrast between reality and fiction of humanity. Watching a historical film may not make any change of the past, but it may change the future. Saving Private Ryan caught my eyes by titling Private Ryan instead of General Ryan, Private is a soldier of the lowest rank which is the common knowledge, why filmmakers would choose to film a story of saving a private but not a general? What has this private done in the war? He must have done something worthy to make a film of him. Questions constantly popping into my mind. When the beginning of the film started with an old man standing in front of the grave of martyrs who were sacrificed in World War II, and Captain Miller appeared in the next scene, I was affirmative that the whole story must be the memory of Captain Miller’s experience in World War II. If we live in multicultural neighborhoods, trade with the global marketplace, and want to use all technology resources available, it is necessary to know two languages. Multilingual people and communities seem to have an edge over monolingual competition. This provides people of all ages an incentive to learn a second language (Genesee, 1998).
